Hello from Germany - FAQ 6x45 or 6mm-223
Hi all,
I am Thomas and came here by searching for information about the 6x45 or 6mm-223 made from a .223 Rem.
Just a little bit about me:
I am a sport shooter, hunter and reloader. Member of a shooting club in the middle of Germany and also member of the BDMP.
My main disciplines are more handgun related (PP1, NPA, etc.) but I also shoot rifle up to 300m and clay shooting when I have time.
Now I have a used Remington 700 Police in .223 Rem.
The barrel is completely worn out. So, I thought about changing the calibre to something more special and I now focus on the 6x45.
I have heard that this calibre is more common in the Nordic countries than in Germany, so I hope to find other shooters and reloaders with experience with this calibre.
BR,
Thomas

Re: Hello from Germany
Hello and welcome. I don't have a 6x45 myself but I know they exist. Regarding other 6mm cartridges I would say there is plenty of experience and competence in this forum and you can at least get bullet recommendations etc.

Re: Hello from Germany
Hi Tomas!
I wouldn’t say that the 6/223 is a commonly used cartridge here in Scandinavia! I have chambered a few rifles for it for other people so I cant say I have any personal experience with it….. I use a 6 BR for small game and like that round a lot, the 6/223 wouldn’t handle bullets over, lets say, 80 grain exceptionally well but if you stay at the lighter bullets it would be a great rifle for up to about 300 m.
A 1-12” twist would be about what I would choose in a 6/223.

Re: Hello from Germany
Oh, that's interesting.
I was actually thinking of bullets between 95 and 110 grain and was planning on an 8 inch twist.

In my opinion that case is better suited for lighter bullets…….

Re: Hello from Germany
As the rifle is a remington 700 there should not be impossible to convert the bolt to something better.. If the bolt head can fit a PPC cartridge (milling out the bolt face), there is calibers like 6ARC and 6BR/PPC that is superiour to anything based on 223.eXenInfo skrev: 29 apr 2025, 18:32 Oh, that's interesting.

But limiting yourself to 223 case head and lenght is just not a good idea in a bolt action rifle. With prices on weapon smithing and barrels, i doubt a new rifle in a better suited caliber is much more expensive - 6 creedmoor, 6x47, 6xc, 6 creedmoor. Or if you want a less of a barrel burner - 6.5 creedmoor.

Thank you for the honest feedback.
I think you are right and I will think about changing to 6mm PPC or 6.5 Grendel.

Re: Hello from Germany - FAQ 6x45 or 6mm-223
In this forum 6mm BR has long been considered king of cartridges for target and hunting up to about roe-deer. Other cartidges with similar performance are of course also interesting. But the 6BR has proved to have suitable performance, barrel life, accuracy etc. I'm my experience the improvement when i switched from in .222 and 22-250 regarding practical accuracy, wind sensitivity etc is much more than ballistics tables says.eXenInfo skrev: 01 maj 2025, 15:05 Thank you for the honest feedback.

The forum might be a bit biased from all the years of availability of 6BR target loads from Norma.
I think the 6x45 has had a larger support in Norway.

Re: Hello from Germany - FAQ 6x45 or 6mm-223
I have no experience of 6x45 but I have a 6PPC for hunting birds, small game and roedeer. In my experience, there is a significant lack of good hunting bullets in 6mm under the weight of 80 gr leadfree and 90 gr leaded bullets.
So, if the main goal is varminting and and shooting on paper is 12" rifling twist suitable.
If the main goal is hunting should you choose 8-9" rifling twist.
A 6x45 with 8" twist will probably be a excellent roedeer rifle but not a long range shooter.
